Through an interdisciplinary practice grounded in a queer perspective, I have explored the theme of imagining new modes of reproduction and propagation.
In recent years, my work has focused on questioning technologies surrounding life and reproduction through the lens of necropolitics. In this talk, I will introduce a series of recent works created using cell culture techniques, as well as projects addressing queer survival. Together, we will consider what forms of resistance might be possible through art for queer people and other minorities living in the Capitalocene, where technology and capitalist power increasingly shape the conditions of life.
Marina Lisa Komiya
Born in Atlanta in 1992 and currently based in Tokyo, Marina Lisa Komiya is an artist, arter, and manga artist.
Driven by an interest in new conceptions of time that emerge from queer perspectives, her practice explores the theme of imagining new modes of reproduction and propagation across a wide range of media, including biotechnology, performance, video, installation, and manga.
Her collaborative projects include Breeding Garden, which draws parallels between the legal prohibition of same-sex marriage and architectural regulations by creating a garden on land where rebuilding is legally prohibited, and FAQ?, a queer feminist art platform dedicated to sustaining practices of questioning.
She is also active as a manga artist under the same name. Her published works include Senjō no Hito (People on the Battlefield), Volumes 1 and 2 (Leed Publishing).
